GW's BBQ on North Nebraska Avenue serves lunch Wednesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. or until it sells out. Until this summer, the day ended there. Since July, the oak grove behind the restaurant opens again at 6 p.m. as Post Oak Beer Garden. A few blocks west on Sioux Road, the new San Juan Parks & Recreation Complex keeps its lights on until 10 p.m. every day.
Both of San Juan's big new places this year run late into the evening. October is the first month the city and the Basilica calendar a run of evening events in those same hours, and the list for the next few weeks is longer than usual.
Six O'Clock Behind GW's
Post Oak Beer Garden held its grand opening on a Saturday evening in late July, behind GW's BBQ at 107 N. Nebraska Ave., according to the RGV Business Journal. The opening came about six months after owner and pitmaster George Watts III was named a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas. The restaurant had already been praised by Texas Monthly.
Watts told the Journal the garden had been part of the plan nearly since the restaurant opened.
"This has been a project probably five years in the making. Almost since we opened the barbecue restaurant, I had the plan of trying to do something like that out there."
The setup has a shipping-container bar with Texas beers on tap, cocktails, bourbon flights and wine. There are picnic tables under the oaks, a live music stage, sports TVs and a playground. Soft drinks and lemonade are on the menu too. Watts described the space as "your backyard, but it's somebody else's place," and said the playground is there because the goal is a family gathering spot.
The food is where the garden and the restaurant overlap. The garden serves brisket items you can't order at the lunch counter: brisket pizza, brisket burgers, brisket nachos and brisket cheese fries. The garden's website also lists a Post Oak Burger and calls it new. If you've stood in the GW's lunch line and missed the last of the brisket, this gives you a second shot the same week.
The schedule fits around the restaurant's. Post Oak is open Thursday through Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's closed Monday through Wednesday. Thursday through Saturday, the garden opens two hours after the restaurant's 4 p.m. close. Sundays, the two share the lunch hours.
The Park That Stays Open Until Ten
The city opened the San Juan Parks & Recreation Complex on West Sioux Road in early May. The city called it "a historic milestone" for its parks department. Outside, there's a splash pad, a walking trail, soccer fields and basketball courts. Inside, a gym has 12 hoops so several games can run at once.
The hours matter as much as the amenities. The city's June schedule lists the complex as open daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. That means the walking trail and the indoor courts are available after work, and in the cooler fall evenings that's the more comfortable time to use them anyway.
The parks department is also adding evening leagues. San Juan is signing up teams for its men's 35-and-over and 50-and-over softball leagues. Games start Wednesday nights on October 21, and registration costs $350. The department has also posted its fall and winter programs. You can register online or in person at the parks office, 610 W. Sioux Road. The grand-opening announcement listed the complex at 604 W. Sioux Rd, so if you're driving over for the first time, aim for that stretch of Sioux.
Here's where San Juan's new evening hours stand this fall:
| Place | Evening hours | Where |
|---|---|---|
| GW's BBQ | Closes at 4 p.m. or sellout, Wed–Sun | 107 N. Nebraska Ave. |
| Post Oak Beer Garden | 6 p.m.–midnight, Thu–Sat | Behind GW's BBQ |
| Parks & Recreation Complex | Open until 10 p.m., daily | W. Sioux Rd. |
| Men's 35+ and 50+ softball | Wednesday nights from Oct. 21 | Sign up at 610 W. Sioux Rd. |
October Fills the Same Hours
Many of the city and Basilica events this month land in the same after-dark window.
- Thursday, October 1, 8–9 p.m. The Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle hosts a Holy Hour for Vocations.
- Sunday, October 4, 6:30 p.m. The Basilica holds a free pet blessing after its first pet walk, which steps off at 5 p.m. Registration for the walk has closed, and so has the deadline for T-shirts and bandanas. The blessing is still listed as open to all.
- Thursday, October 8, 6–9 p.m. The city's Fire Safety Bash takes place in front of Fire Station 1 on South Nebraska Avenue, with family activities, food, refreshments and music.
- Saturday and Sunday, October 17–18. The Basilica's Migrant Welcoming Festival 2026 runs Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. at 400 N. Virgen de San Juan Blvd.
- Saturday, October 31, 8 p.m. Buck'n Crazy's show calendar has the band at GW's Post Oak Beer Garden. No cover, all ages.
The festival is the longest of these. The Basilica's announcement lists live music, dance performances, a car show, kiddie rides, "lots of food," jewelry, arts and crafts. The raffle streams live on Facebook Sunday night. For details, the Basilica lists 956-787-0033.
The Fire Safety Bash is also a look at what's changed on South Nebraska. The city's development page lists the new City Hall at 512 S. Nebraska Ave. and a new Fire Station #1 on the same street. The same page describes a South Nebraska improvement project with ADA sidewalks, new paths and grants for storefront facades. KRGV reported in July that the roadwork was blocking access to at least one business, Coral Beauty Salon, and that the city expected to finish in early August. We haven't found a later public update on the project, so it's worth checking with the city before heading over on the 8th.
The Mornings Still Belong to the Long-Running Traditions
San Juan's oldest events still start early, and two of them this month are on Saturday mornings.
The 25th Annual PSJA Tri-City Red Ribbon Parade starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, at City Hall, at South Nebraska Avenue and 6th Street. It ends at PSJA Early College High School, 805 W. Ridge Road. The route starts in front of the building the city calls its new City Hall, so this year's parade sets off from the rebuilt end of Nebraska.
Three weeks later, the Legion of Mary holds its 7th annual Walking the Camino of San Juan del Valle on Saturday, October 24. Registration opens at 5:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Walkers leave at 6 a.m. and finish at the Basilica.
Put the two halves of October together and a single Saturday can now fill a whole day in San Juan. On October 3, you could watch the parade at 9 a.m., get to GW's before the brisket runs out, take the kids to the splash pad in the afternoon and be under the oaks at Post Oak when it opens at 6. A year ago, that last stop didn't exist.
Before You Head Out
A few details are still unsettled, so check these before you go:
- Hours. The GW's BBQ and Post Oak Beer Garden websites don't show when their hours were last updated. Confirm on the day, especially for Sunday lunch, when both are open at the same time.
- Live music. Post Oak's live music page is a booking form for musicians. It doesn't list a schedule, so band listings like Buck'n Crazy's October 31 date come from the performers' own calendars.
- Shops at Chavez. A Chick-fil-A was announced there in July 2025. The city then postponed the May 11, 2026 groundbreaking, and we haven't found a new date posted.
Hacienda Properties RGV has worked from Pharr, a few minutes from Nebraska Avenue, since 1986, and our team keeps up with what's opening in San Juan the same way you do. If you have a question about the Sioux Road complex, the South Nebraska work or any other change near you, in English or Spanish, contact us. We're glad to share what we know.
